CARMEN® ADR RECOGNITION FOR HAZARDOUS MATERIAL SIGNS

Dangerous goods – identified safely

CARMEN® ADR Recognition for hazardous material signs

OVERVIEW

Traffic management brings the most benefits when all vehicles are properly identified – especially if a vehicle carries dangerous goods. Such function is just a small add-on to an ITS system, but can save lives in risky situations.

Carmen® ADR is developed for Automatic Dangerous Goods Recognition to recognise and decipher the hazard identification number (shortly HIN number or also Kemler code) of commercial vehicles carrying hazardous materials. By reading these codes, traffic monitoring and road safety systems can become highly automated – roads, tunnels and bridges remain safe while transporting dangerous cargo.

When information matters

A truck is in flames, a liquid is leaking out of its tank and who knows if it is going to explode in the next second or not… In such events, it is a must to be aware whether that vehicle carried any dangerous goods or not. Modern transportation systems track all these information using automatic recognition of hazardous material signs – an identifier such trucks are obligated to possess. This is one of the moments when having that information is crucial.

ADR SIGNS

These signs consist of two parts, the top number (2 digits) is the UN number for identifying the hazardous material while the bottom number (4 digits) is a general hazard identifier encoding the hazard class and subdivision.

E-ADR SIGNS

The empty version of ADR signs is also identified by Carmen® ADR. This sign is used on the front and back of such vehicles that carry multiple hazardous materials.
